For the first time ever, Apple’s iPhones secured the top seven positions in the ranking of best-selling smartphones in 2023. The top 10 list saw the remaining three spots occupied by Samsung, featuring the Galaxy A models, underscoring the market impact of these two brands.

Since 2021, no brand other than Apple and Samsung has made it into the top 10. Compared to the previous year, Samsung managed to secure one more model in the top ten best-selling smartphones. However, it slipped from the top spots, considering its Galaxy A13 was ranked fourth in 2022. Combined, the sales of iPhone and Galaxy models in the top 10 accounted for 20% of the market share, marking “the highest level ever reached,” as stated by Counterpoint. In 2022, this top 10 accounted for 19% of the market share.
The Indian market drives sales for Apple and Samsung.
The best-selling smartphone in 2023, the iPhone 14, saw significant figures in the United States and China, which accounted for half of its sales. This model represented 19% of total iPhone sales in 2023, a significant drop compared to the previous best-seller, the iPhone 13 in 2022, which accounted for 28% of Apple-branded smartphone sales. Additionally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max emerged as the top-selling smartphone in the last quarter of 2023.
While Apple dominates the top spots for smartphones with the highest sales, the rankings remained stable in 2023. India notably contributed to this stability by becoming the fifth smartphone market to surpass 10 million iPhones sold in a single year. The iPhone 13 performed exceptionally well there, as did in Japan, where carrier promotions boosted sales. For Samsung, its budget-friendly A series drove sales. The Galaxy A14 5G saw strong numbers in the United States and India, where it emerged as the best-selling smartphone in 2023.
Counterpoint predicts that the top 10 best-selling smartphones in 2024 will represent “a larger proportion of total sales. We also expect Chinese brands to enter the list. And as brands increasingly launch models exclusively with 5G, the top 10 will likely reflect this trend.”
