In a nail-biting finale, the 150th Kentucky Derby saw Mystik Dan, a 16-1 underdog, clinch victory in a photo finish, edging past rivals Sierra Leone (5-1) and Forever Young (6-1) before a crowd of over 156,000 spectators.

Despite being the crowd favorite at 7-2 odds, Fierceness faltered after leading at the quarter pole, ultimately finishing a disappointing 15th.

Kenneth McPeek, Mystik Dan’s trainer, made history by becoming the first trainer since 1952 to secure victories at both the Derby and the Kentucky Oaks in the same weekend, with Thorpedo Anna triumphing at the Oaks on Friday.

The 150th Kentucky Derby boasted a record-breaking $5 million purse, with Mystik Dan claiming a lion’s share of $3.1 million, surpassing the previous $3 million mark set in 2019.

Kenneth McPeek attributed the win to jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., lauding him as “one of the most underrated riders in racing,” although acknowledging that the historic victory might change that perception.

Amidst some brief confusion over the winner, the result underwent review before being officially declared, leaving Hernandez to describe the wait as “the longest few minutes of my life.”

After a race where the lead changed hands multiple times, Mystik Dan surged ahead down the inner rail, maintaining the lead to narrowly beat out Sierra Leone and Forever Young.

McPeek achieved a career Triple Crown on Saturday, having previously tasted victory at the 2020 Preakness Stakes and the 2002 Belmont Stakes.

Catching Freedom, entering the Derby with 8-1 odds, secured fourth place, while T O Password (47-1) rounded out the top five.

Next up, Mystik Dan sets his sights on the Preakness Stakes on May 18, aiming to conquer the second leg of a potential triple crown.
